TV’s Michael Aspel and Alvin Stardust presented Surrey’s care ‘Oscars’ as the region's care workers took centre stage in a dazzling gala Awards ceremony held at Epsom Downs Racecourse (Friday 22 November 2013).
The Awards recognise the hard work and dedication of people working in a wide variety of jobs in adult social care including dementia care, caring for people in their own homes and caring for adults with learning disabilities. The 55 finalists were all nominated by their colleagues, with glowing and often moving testimonials from service users and their families.
This year’s Awards were presented by distinguished TV broadcaster Michael Aspel OBE and 70’s pop sensation Alvin Stardust, with each award announced by BBC Surrey presenter Sylvie Blackmore. Other distinguished guests included Dr Glen Mason from the Department of Health.
There were 14 award categories open to care workers including Beyond the Call of Duty, Manager of the Year, Ancillary Worker, Care Newcomer, Provider of the Year, Dementia Care Team and Outstanding Contribution to Social Care. Over 350 care employers and their staff cheered on the winners in an unforgettable evening which included a Champagne reception, dinner, dancing and even a few musical numbers by Alvin Stardust himself.
The Awards were organised by Surrey Care Association which represents the interests of over 700 independent providers of care and support services in the county.
Erica Lockhart, Chief Executive of Surrey Care Association said; "This is our fifth annual Awards ceremony and the judges had a very tough job this year as the standard of entries was extremely high; we really feel that everyone is a winner. It’s a great pleasure and a privilege to celebrate the excellent, caring service that goes on in Surrey as our care workers are so often unsung heroes and we want to change that by highlighting and rewarding their achievements. The Surrey Care Awards are helping to raise the profile of adult social care in the county and showcasing the good practice of Surrey care providers as well as promoting the wide range of rewarding employment opportunities that exist within the care sector."
